POLICE speed checks saw a high number of offences in Heckfordbridge on Wednesday.

Colchester Community Policing team performed the checks following calls from the community to help tackle speedy drivers.

The highest speed was recorded by a careless motorist travelling at 50 miles-per-hour in a 30 limit.

Overall there were nine tickets issued for speeding.

Worryingly, two drivers were dealt with for drug driving offences, while two community resolutions were ordered.

Last year, drivers caught speeding during lockdown were handed 108 points and fined just under £9,000.

A total of 18 drivers caught breaking the speed limit by more than 25 miles an hour appeared in court in late September A further five had already appeared the previous week and received fines totalling more than £2,200 and were given a total 27 points.

During April and May it included one driver who was caught clocking 130mph on the A12.

Police are continuing their efforts to make Essex’s roads safer.
