A COMPETITION to figure out where in Colchester this 1925 painting depicts has been extended.

The mysterious painting was donated to the Victor Batte Lay Foundation as a gift by retiring trustee Mary Perrins, who recently purchased it at an auction in the town.

It was created in 1925 by Lucian Pissarro, the eldest of seven children of Camille Pissarro, a world-famous French impressionist.

Lucian lived intermittently in Colchester after marrying the sister of Ruth Bensusan Butt, the town’s first ever female doctor who lived and practised at The Minories.

Sadly, Lucian, who was an acclaimed impressionist painter in his own right, never identified where the scene depicted.

The charity, which owns Colchester’s famous Minories gallery, is looking for the best suggestions of where the landscape depicts.

Directors of the foundation want to establish where it is before it goes on display at the reopened Minories and are offering a £50 prize to the person who, in the opinion of a team of expert judges, suggests the most likely spot.

Entries can be sent up until next Friday (Dec 11).

To enter, email robbie.bryson@newsquest.co.uk with where you believe the painting is of and a short explanation of the reasons behind your decision.
