I was very disappointed that Braintree District Council leader Graham Butland didn’t feel the need to resign after a petition was presented to the authority calling for him to do so.
His rejected 30,000-homes West Braintree and West Tey “garden villages” new town plans have cost Braintree council more than £1.25million and overall £8million in total.
That money would have gone some way to fill the huge budget deficits at Braintree and Essex County Council caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
When the inevitable cuts to council services happen, they’ll be on him. I was also very disappointed that Braintree’s deputy leader Tom Cunningham defended Mr Butland so vociferously at last week’s full council meeting.
Mr Cunningham came across like a New York cop at a bloody murder scene saying to passers-by “Nothing to see here, move along!”
The problem is there’s plenty to see - millions of pounds wasted and an erroneous planning policy that has left the district open to large-scale speculative housing development due to the lack of a Local Plan.
