A PUB quiz king is continuing to entertain brainboxes by moving his competitions online.

Chris Hunt started the monthly film, television and music contests when he worked in Purple Dog in Eld Lane, Colchester, eight years ago.

And the event was so popular the pub has held quizzes on the first Monday of every month ever since.

But the coronavirus lockdown has stopped pubs from opening meaning the quizmaster was not able to run one there, nor at the other events he regularly hosts at Three Wise Monkeys in Ipswich, the White Hart in Coggeshall and the Queen’s Head in West Bergholt.

Instead, he has moved the quiz online and more than 1,400 households viewed him setting the questions from his own home on Thursday and streaming live on Facebook.

The event also coincided with his 34th birthday.

Maldon and Burnham Standard:

Chris's quizzes have raised more than £50,000 since he began, and this one alone brought in more than £1,800 for the NHS.

"It went amazingly," Chris said.

"It was a film, TV & music quiz consisting of nine rounds and two picture rounds.

"I posted an image for the picture rounds onto the event about half an hour before going live, for people to save and refer to.

"It started at 7.30pm, with a pause to clap at 8pm for the NHS, then went on until around 9:45pm.

"On the night it raised £1,805 with more afterwards.

"I honestly would’ve been happy with £800 being raised so I can’t believe it fetched a thousand more."

"It was all donated to the NHS via a justgiving link.

"It smashed what I’d usually make.

"On a good pub night I’d make between £250 and £300."

Chris also usually runs special themed events monthly at the Three Wise Monkeys in Colchester and Ipswich where superfans of top series and shows like Star Wars, Game of Thrones and Gavin and Stacey have had their knowledge examined.

Another streamed online quiz will be held on April 17.

"Initially, it was really weird doing it to a screen," Chris said.

"You don’t get to see people’s reactions but I responded to some of the comments that came up.

"It ran really smoothly though and I received loads of positive feedback on the quiz page afterwards."
