For one of Colchester's brightest new band's Beans means more than just Heinz.

That's because it's the title of their debut single, due for release later this month at a special gig taking place at Three Wise Monkeys.

Made-up of brothers Oscar and Luca Ryland, Effie Lawrence and Eleanor Helliwell, all of whom go to Thomas Lord Audley School, the band got together back in May when keyboardist Effie was asked by her dad, Geoff, whether she wanted to play at his annual music day at the Albion pub in Rowhedge.

Effie says: "My dad has been running it for a while and this year he asked me if I had anyone I wanted to play with. I knew Oscar and his brother because we used to go to the same gigs all the time, and I knew Eleanor from school."

But while Luca had been playing the drums for eight years and Oscar the guitar for four years, Eleanor had only picked up the bass a matter of months earlier.

Eleanor adds: "That's why when Effie asked me to be the band I originally said 'no' but she was pretty persuasive and I just practised a lot."

It obviously worked because fellow young rock upstarts The Verdicts saw them at the Albion music day and asked them to play support at their next gig at the Brewhouse in Colchester.

Since then the four-piece have been making a real name for themselves playing a mix of covers as well as their own punk rock originals.

Citing influences such as Black Midi, Radiohead and Slint, the young band already have nine original songs, one of which is debut release Beans they recorded with producing maestro Tom Donovan, of Monster Florence fame.

They even have a video to go with it.

Oscar says: "We all go on holiday to a camp site on Mersea Island and one year my dad had this poncho on and it was really funny so this year we asked him to bring it with him and we filmed him walking around the campsite with his hands covered in beans."

They'll be officially releasing the song at a gig they're playing with The Verdicts and Sandcastle Jesus on January 16 at Three Wise Monkeys in Colchester after which they've got a BBC Introducing session at BBC Suffolk on January 22.
