PLANS to demolish and rebuild an historic bridge will move forward next week when investigation work gets under way.

Essex Highways says it will be setting up temporary traffic lights along The Green and Bridge Street in Finchingfield from Monday to allow workmen to carry out trial hole investigations.

A small section of Bridge Street will also be closed to all traffic next week.

Pedestrian access via the footbridge will be unaffected. The work will allow them to determine the precise location and depth of utility services in and around the village green.

The results of the investigation will help experts decide whether a temporary crossing can be put in place when work begins on the bridge.

Finchingfield Parish Council, residents and business owners have called for a temporary crossing to avoid the need for a 28-mile diversion.
