POLICE have vowed to take action against drivers who drove the wrong way down a motorway to avoid long queues.

The warning came earlier this week following a crash between two cars close to Stansted Airport on the M11.

Emergency services were called to the scene around 7.50pm on Sunday.

A woman was taken to hospital with what police have described as non-serious injuries.

A 50-year-old man was also taken to hospital but was then arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs and drink, failing to provide an evidential sample, careless driving, assaulting an emergency working and causing alarm and distress.

A spokesman for Essex Police says investigations into the crash are ongoing but the force will look to track down drivers who tried to avoid delays caused by the incident.

He added: "We received information that a number of vehicles drove the wrong way after getting caught in traffic.

"We will be looking to take action against them."

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting incident 1130 of 13/10.
