A PENSIONER has been airlifted to hospital in a life-threatening condition after a collision in Halstead.

Emergency services were called to Mount Hill at around 11am on Saturday to reports of a two-vehicle collision.

The air ambulance landed in a nearby field and the driver of one vehicle, who is in her 80s, was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition.

The driver of the other vehicle was taken to hospital by land ambulance. His injuries are not believed to be serious.

Firefighters from Halstead Fire Station were sent to the scene and assisted in releasing the casualties from their vehicles.

A spokesman for the Essex Fire and Rescue Service said: "The road was closed whilst we worked with the air ambulance, paramedics and the police.

"One person was flown to Cambridge due to their injuries and another was taken by road to another hospital.

"The road may be closed for some time while the police carry out the investigations.

"Thank you to all those who helped out before we got there and for giving us the room."

The road remained closed into the afternoon whilst Essex Police investigated the circumstances surrounding the crash.

PC Wheeler of Essex Police said on Twitter: "Today saw all emergency services pull together for a serious road traffic collision on Mount Hill, Halstead.

"Best of wishes to the injured parties on their recovery. Enquiries are ongoing by Stanway traffic."
