An inquest into a man found hanging at his home, heard that he intended to take his own life.

Steven Adams, 43, was discovered at his home in Witham by a neighbour on March 17.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chelmsford Coroner’s Court heard neighbour Kevin Heath became concerned after he couldn’t reach Mr Adams by text message and he wasn’t answering his front door.

Eventually he gained entry and found an unresponsive Mr Adams hanging.

The police were called and arrived shortly afterward, before pronouncing him dead at 5.05pm.

Toxicology reports revealed Mr Adams had a large amount of alcohol in his system when he died, but that this was not the cause of his death.

The court heard he has a history of depression and was on the verge of being an alcoholic at times in his life.

Medical reports from Blackwater Medical Centre in Maldon also revealed that in 2017, Mr Adams had overdosed on prescription drugs, but made a full recovery after treatment.

His mother told the court how in the months leading up to his death he had cut down the amount he was drinking.

She told the inquest: “I had given him £15 because he couldn’t use his credit cards, and he only had £10.23 in his bank account.

“On the Friday before his death we had a conversation and he told me he had spent £10 of it on drink and that he was sorry.”

However, the police said there was not a significant amount of alcohol at the scene of Mr Adams death.

Assistant Coroner Jonathan Goodman recorded a verdict that the 43-year-old intended to take his own life.

He said: “Having heard all the evidence today, including the reports that Steven had previously tried to take his own life, I have come to the conclusion that Steven intended to take his own life.

“He was clearly a much loved and supported son and brother, not just financially but also in trying to get him help.

“You have my deepest sympathy for your loss.”
