THE county’s biggest dog show returns to Hatfield Peverel this weekend.

Essex Dog Day, which attracts thousands of pooch-lovers each year, has raised nearly £500,000 in the past, and this year the organisers are hoping to break through the milestone figure.

Proceeds will go to the Essex Community Foundation to be distributed to deserving charities which provide support to people in need across the county.

The event will feature competitions around the showground for proud owners and dogs alike.

Organising committee chairman Ian Twinley said: “This year’s show is going to be bigger and better than ever with plenty of exciting new displays and non-stop competitions.

“So, come and join thousands of dog owners, their families and dogs and help us break the half a million pounds barrier raised for charity by Essex Dog Day since we started.”

There are multiple awards up for grabs including most handsome, best pedigree, and best in show, all of which will be decided on by an expert panel of judges.

Paul Kelly will be commentating, and the New Hall School Children’s arena will also make an appearance to provide extra dog show classes and activities for under-15s.

Other events include the gun dog scurry, involving dogs diving into the lake to retrieve bait against the clock, as well as an agility course featuring ramps, see-saws, and tunnels.

There will also be activities for those not taking part in the competitions, such as the return of the Essex Police Dog unit and equestrian events.

The children’s entertainment area will offer a variety of activities, including zorb running, face-painting, and donkey rides.

The event takes place on Sunday, August 25 from 10am to 5pm at Crix in Hatfield Peverel – a privately-owned Georgian house which can be accessed directly off the A12.

Admission is £9 (£5 children) and parking is free.
