A SECURITY guard is pushing his legs to their limits by cycling ten miles-a-day for a month for charity.

Ross Redmond, of Brooklyn Road, Dovercourt, has decided to pedal 300 miles throughout September on an exercise bike to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

The 25-year-old, who works at Fryatt Hospital, is undergoing the challenge in memory of his grandma Christine Walker.

Christine died a year before Ross was born from cancer.

Ross grew up hearing stories about her kindness and he is often likened to her by his mum Julie-Ann Walker.

Ross said: “We grew up learning my nan was the most loving person in the whole world.

“There has never been a bad word said about my nan and my mum looks identical to her.

“I am doing this challenge in memory of my nan, and this is my way of raising money to give back to Cancer Research UK.”

Ross has already started training for his charity challenge by cycling ten miles at a time on an exercise bike at Dovercourt Bay Lifestyles.

He said the ten mile pedal was taking him an hour to complete, but he can now cycle ten miles in about 35 minutes.

The security officer will be fitting in the ten mile cycles at Dovercourt Bay Lifestyles around his shifts at the hospital.

Ross said the challenge is also part of his own fitness journey to lose weight.

He said: “I suffered with mental health issues when I was growing up and when I was 18 years old my weight became a problem.

“So I recently thought, I am 25 years old and need to take my health into my own hands.

“Cancer runs in my family, so I wanted to try and reduce that risk by getting healthier.”

Ross has already raised nearly £200 from donations.
