SWIMMING classes are being added to a programme of events aiming to help people feel confident in sport.

The Sport For Confidence programme at Leisure World Colchester is expanding to include swimming as part of its main programme of activities.

The pioneering programme places specialist health professionals alongside sports coaches to deliver a wide range of sports for those who face barriers.

Since its launch in January more than 80 people have attended Sport for Confidence sessions on Monday and Wednesday afternoons.

Activities include Boccia on a Monday from 1.30pm until 2.30pm, multisports on a Wednesday from 12.30pm until 1.30pm, and indoor football from 2.30pm until 3.30pm.

Swimming is being added to Monday’s schedule, between noon and 1pm.

Tom Doughty, head coach at Sport For Confidence, said: “Swimming is a great activity which can deliver significant mental and physical benefits.

“For some, the feeling of being in the water provides a calming and soothing effect it is difficult to mirror elsewhere.”

“These sessions, run by an allied health professional and swim coach, recognise those attending will appreciate a quiet, controlled environment and may need a little extra support and encouragement during their visit.”

Theresa Higgins, councillor responsible for commercial services, said the programme has gone from strength to strength.

She said: “I’m pleased to see the programme develop to include swimming sessions. This builds on the great work that is already happening in Colchester to engage individuals most in need and who will really prosper from the many social, mental and physical benefits sport and physical activity delivers.”
