THE Cannabidiol industry is on a roll. CBD oils and hemp products have been gaining momentum in the health and wellness world over the past year.

Businesses in north Essex are joining the trend by selling the compound which has been credited with helping relieve pain and reduce anxiety.

It is the growth in the popularity of CBD products which has given the owner of a wine a record store high hopes for his latest business venture.

Steve Tattam, who runs Winyl with his partner Whilmari Swift, has decided to launch canna-wine and canna-sangria.

The venue, in South Street, Manningtree, claims to be the first in the country to supply CBD infused sangria.

The oil is made from cannabis sativa, a cannabis-derived product which influences the release of chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin which make you feel good.

The compound has been reported to help people with conditions including insomnia, migraines, psoriasis and acne, although there is no medically verified proof to support this.

Unlike its cousin tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it’s not psychoactive.

Steve, 51, said he is always on the look out for new and unusual wines for Winyl.

He said: “We met the supplier at the London Wine Fair in May and this wine fits our chilled out ethos.

“At Winyl we encourage guests to relax with a glass of wine and listen to vinyl, also being fully organic it has less additives and it tastes good.

“It is made to be served chilled in small quantities like a Vermouth or port as an aperitif, but can be mixed as part of a longer drink or cocktail.

“The sangria is a premixed sparkling drink - very memorable and different to standard sparkling wines.”

The active THC in the wine and sangria is less than 0.2 per cent, so it will not give drinkers the feeling of being high.

Steve said: “More and more people are being made aware of the benefits of hemp and CBD products.

“It’s moving away from the previous associations of recreational drug use and getting stoned on marijuana to the more medicinal and relaxing properties of CBD.”

Aside from Winyl, other businesses in north Essex selling CBD products include Canna CBD, in Wrabness, Green Coffee Lab, in Colchester, and CBD Pure Life, in Tiptree.

Steve said: “Most of our followers are quite astute and already aware of the growing popularity and benefits of CBD products, so to combine this with a product we already sell has been seen as a logical step.

“I hope people who are either concerned or interested will come into the store so they can find out more and perhaps try it, as we do free tastings on most of the wines we stock.” Despite the reported health benefits, NHS England’s website said the quality and content of many cannabis-based products is not known

It said: “Some products that might claim to be medical cannabis, such as CBD oil or hemp oil, are available to buy legally as food supplements from health stores.

“But there’s no guarantee these are of good quality or provide any health benefits.”

Winyl will supply its new products from a Spanish company and are now on sale.
