A MUM with a dangerous form of skin cancer is raising funds for a potentially life-saving piece of technology.

Lisa Costello was diagnosed with a Stage 1 melanoma and had her mole removed, however she has more than 200 moles on her body and is highly susceptible.

Her dad, Geoff Cleal, had the same disease. He died in November 2015, aged 59.

While Lisa, a driving instructor from Shrub End, Colchester, fights the illness, she has also made it her mission to raise awareness of the often dormant condition.

Lisa, who is a mother-of-four, is raising money for a mole mapping machine at Colchester Hospital.

She said: “I’ve been in talks with the founder of Melanoma UK and my aim is to raise enough money to buy a mole mapping machine.

“I have recently had to go private as we do not have one in Colchester, so this will help lots of people in the future.

“The machine will be in dad’s name.”

The machine takes photos of patients in 27 different positions and a dermatologist looks at every mole in detail.

It is particularly useful for people who are known to have an increased risk of the development of malignant melanoma.

Lisa said: “Mole mapping is a way to detect skin cancer early, monitor moles for any changes and give peace of mind.

“I was told by my dermatologist I needed to keep up to date with any changes because I have lots of moles.

“You have to stand in front of a machine that scans your whole body in different positions and then picks out what moles need watching.

“You then repeat the process every year or earlier if needed.”

It costs £195 for a 45-minute private session and to buy a machine would cost nearly £30,000.

Unfortunately this service is not offered under the NHS in Colchester.

She has already raised more than £14,000 for Farleigh Hospice and Cancer Research since 2016.

Now she is raising funds for Melanoma UK and the mole mapping machine for Colchester.
