LAST Thursday was National Pet Day, a day for celebrating our furry – and not so furry – friends who need homes.

National Pet Day was founded in 2006 to celebrate the joy pets bring and to create public awareness of the many different kinds of animals awaiting a forever home in shelters and rescues all around the globe.

Danaher Animal Home is an independent animal rescue centre in Wethersfield which helps to find the forever homes of dogs, cats and small animals all year round.

Deb Satchell, animal home manager at Danaher Animal Home, said: “National Pet Day is a great opportunity to remind people about all the animals who don’t have anywhere to call home.

“There are many benefits of owning a pet and at Danaher we’re here to help families find the right one and help make sure they all have their own happy ending.”

In 2018 Danaher rehomed more than 500 animals.

Some of the most common animals looking for homes are dogs, cats and rabbits.

On average a dog spend 60 days at Danaher waiting for its new owner to come and meet it.

Cats have an average stay of 72 days and rabbits can be there for around 100 days.
