A THUG who bit and repeatedly punched a priest in an unprovoked attack has been jailed after breaching the terms of his suspended sentence order.

Daniel Chew admitted breaching his order for a second time in as many months at Colchester Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

In October Chew, of South Street, Colchester, was handed a 16 week jail term, suspended for 18 months, after admitting assault on the clergyman at St James The Great Church in East Hill, Colchester.

After drinking four cans of Stella Artois lager, the 41-year-old approached the victim from behind and hit him with a barrage of punches.

Another member of staff tried to intervene but Chew bit the priest on the arm and headbutted him before a group eventually managed to get him to stop.

At the hearing Chew, who used to work on the MTV UK spin-off of popular car programme Pimp My Ride, was also ordered to attend an accredited programme, complete unpaid work and rehabilitation activity requirement days.

However, a probation service report read out in court yesterday said he had attended 25 out of 59 appointments, with 20 acceptable and 14 unacceptable absences.

Matthew Bone, mitigating, said Chew suffered from schizophrenia and had been having problems with his medication causing him to feel unwell and unmotivated.

“He has changed his medication and looked at what has happened since,” he said.

“This report was from February 14 and since then he has now completed a total of 77 hours unpaid work out of 80.

“Since the report was written he has engaged actively with the process.”

Magistrates decided to activate part of Chew’s suspended sentence and jailed him for ten weeks.

Chairman of the bench Martin Stuchfield said: “This is a bridge too far.

“There has been poor engagement with the rehabilitation aspects of the order which is a major concern to us.

“In these circumstances there is no justification for us not activating the sentence.”
