A LARGE police escort which was seen zipping through the streets of Witham this morning was part of a training exercise.

Residents and motorists reported seeing four police bikes, two BMW 4x4s and a Land Rover Discovery heading through town at around 9.50am.

One driver, who was stopped by the escort, said: "It was very unusual to see.

"They came through Witham, went right along Cressing Road up to Galleys Corner and then carried on along Cressing Road towards Braintree.

"The police bikes were leapfrogging each other and stopping the traffic to let the cars through.

"There was a black unmarked BMW X5 on blue lights and a silver Land Rover Discovery, which was being followed another BMW X5 which was marked.

"It was the kind of set-up you might have for royalty or a prime minister."

Essex Police have confirmed the vehicles were taking part in a training exercise.
