A YOUNGSTER has met the team who helped him discover the grave of his great-grandfather who was killed during World War One.

Ryan Dawkins, 16, visited the Anglia Tours office, in Kelvedon, to meet the guides after taking a school trip to the historic battlefields last year.

During the visit to the offices Ryan caught up with Steve Roberts - the guide who helped him find the grave of his great grandfather, Lance Corporal Reginald John Boyes.

Ian Coyne, from Anglia Tours, said: "It was great to see Ryan tell Steve about the information he, his mum Jo and his grandad, had gathered on Reginald.

"But what was really special was the look on Ryan’s face when Steve showed him a folder which contained an absolute wealth of information on his great grandad."

Mr Roberts had collected records for Reginald which he had placed on the file he gave to Ryan showing where and when he joined up, where he trained and where he first saw action.

Diary entries showed his movements right up to his death on October 3, 1917, and where he had been buried until he was transferred to Poelcapelle British Cemetery, in Belgium.

The teen, who goes to school in Hertfordshire, visited the World War One battlefields with his school in November to mark the 100 years since the end of the war.

Ryan's mother, Jo, said: "I think tours like the one Anglia took Ryan on are fantastic and hearing the boys talk so animatedly about what happened to those young men is inspiring.

"Usually history is a subject that doesn't mean much to teenagers but to visit and see the places the history actually took place has ingrained the facts into their minds far better than any lecture or book."
