YOUNGSTERS got a chance to try their hand, and feet, at a new Olympic sport.

A professional skateboarding instructor taught 118 children at Wix and Wrabness Primary School the basics of the popular pastime, which will be one of the new sports debuting at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Liam McKee, instructor, said: “They did really well.

“I taught four sets of about 30 children, that’s the entire school from reception to year six.

“It’s the bare basics and starts with where to stand and how to stand on the board.

“Then they learnt how to pull each other along, working in pairs or groups of three.

“Their balance comes almost instantly and the Key Stage Two and up children all tried out a trick at the end of their session.

“Skateboarding and scooter riding at the moment are really excelling.

“We are seeing teenagers and children at an incredible calibre.

“I see ten-year-olds that are better than me.

“And in 2020 it is making the society norm and will be at the Olympics after being underground for about 65 years.”

The schoolchildren were kitted out in safety helmets and pads to take part in the day of workshops.

They worked in pairs to lean how to stand and balance on a skateboard before moving around the hall and completing a trick.
