HARWICH’S beacon was lit during a poignant ceremony to mark the Armistice centenary.

As part of the national commemoration to mark the end of the First World War, members of the Harwich Society lit the town’s beacon on Sunday, November 11, at 7pm.

The beacon is in Cliff Park and the lighting was preceded by the reading of a tribute by the society’s chairman.

Harwich Society chairman Colin Farnell said: “It was more successful than I thought it would be.

“Well over a hundred people turned up to see the beacon being lit.

“We read out a tribute to the millions who lost their lives during the First World War.

“There were over 1,000 other beacons lit at the same time.

“It was very touching.”

The commemoration was organised nationally by Pageant Master, Bruno Peek, under the title of The Battle’s Over.
