Richard Hart and Robert Clubb state in the paper dated October 12 that the traffic lights at the bottom of Brook Street are not serving their purpose and make congestion worse.

I disagree. Yes, there is congestion from Magdalen Street into Brook Street at rush hour.

To me, the traffic lights have made the crossing safer compared to the roundabout that was there before.

A simple way forward would be if the light at the bottom of Brook Street is green for more than 30 seconds.

What would help too, is if the barriers at the level crossing weren’t closed longer than absolutely necessary.

Often one has to wait there for several minutes before a train arrives. Perhaps the council can look into this?

As to the removal of the double roundabouts at St Andrews Avenue, what evidence is there that single roundabouts have a negative impact on traffic flow?

Again, I would like to suggest that negotiating a single roundabout is safer, if only because it’s easier to see where other traffic is coming from.

Hopefully, the new roundabouts will be made suitable for cyclists too – it’s a hazard to pass any roundabout in Colchester by bike.
