One person in the Maldon District is a target of domestic abuse every two days.
This shocking statistic comes after more than 200 people were subject to threatening behaviour, violence or abuse in the district between November 2011 and October 2012.
Some 213 domestic abuse crimes have been recorded by Essex Police in the 12 months, according to figures released in a Freedom of Information request by the Standard.
This has increased from 176 crimes the year before and 201 crimes between November 2006 and October 2010.
Of 213 crimes recorded, only 103 people were charged.
