Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes after a lorry overturned blocking the A130.
The A130 Northbound is fully blocked between Rettendon (A132) and the Howe Green Interchange (A12 Junction 17) after the lorry overturned.
There is one lane blocked on the southbound carriageway.
Police are stopping traffic from Fairglen interchange and other routes onto the northern section of the A130 were closed.
At least four fire crews were at the scene.
A passer-by said: "It really is quite unbelieveable.
"The lorry is literally crossing all three lanes going northbound.
"People were actually getting out of their car to walk about and get a look at it."
He added: "It's going to causing huge disruption to a lot of people."
Heavy queues are building, including on the A13.
There has been another crash on the Southbound carriageway, so both carriageways are now blocked.
Motorists should avoid the area.
