ART trail organisers were shocked to get a visit from the police - after someone had complained about nude pictures in a window display.

The display, at 51 High Street, Burnham, featured nude portraits by artist Fianne Stanford.

Her display contains two full nudes and a head and shoulders piece.

However, one member of the public did not appreciate the artwork in question and complained to the police.

Police Community Support Officers visited the house to investigate the complaint, but did not take it any further.

Ms Stanford, who lives in Burnham near where the exhibition is taking place, said: “I suppose I just forgot this is a small village.

“Tracy Saunders, who runs the art show, rang me to say somebody was very cross about it.

“She had rung the police to check we hadn’t offended anybody, but the person who complained also contacted the police.”

Organiser Tracy Saunders said: “There was an outraged gentleman who contacted us to complain.

“He was quoting the bible at me and he wasn’t very happy with the work and thought it shouldn’t be on display in Burnham.

“I checked with the police to see where we stood and they said it was fine.

“I was a bit surprised because he could walk into any art gallery and see pictures of nudes. He thought it was wrong to have that on display where children could see it.

“It is down to individual taste I suppose.

“The images really are not pornographic.”

Heather Cole, who has two displays at the Burnham Art Trail, said: “We couldn’t believe someone had complained about it.

“We all saw the funny side of it in the end, it was quite hilarious.”

Sgt Julian Wenborn, of Maldon police, said that no formal complaint was made.

Sgt Wenborn said: “We have had nothing formal come to us, nobody has made a telephone call to us where it has been logged so the complaint may have been made in passing.”

The display is still on show and will remain so until the end of the art trail on Sunday.
