A FISH and chip shop in the Maldon area was visited by trading standards officers recently - but was not found to be acting illegally.
Undercover officers from Essex County Council targeted unnamed shops in Maldon, Chelmsford, Brentwood, Harlow, Rochford, Castle Point, Epping Forest, Tendring and Basildon following reports of cod being substituted for cheaper alternatives.
Officers ordered cod and chips from the menu before identifying themselves and collecting a sample for testing.
Following the investigation, it was found that all the meals tasted were genuine.
Tracey Chapmen, county council cabinet member with responsibility for trading standards said: “Our trading standards team has proven once again what a fantastic job they do.
“By taking a proactive stance to intelligence reports such as this, residents are reassured and a clear message is put out to rogue traders: you are not welcome in Essex.”
