Around 40 homes have been evacuated after a number of suspicious items were discovered at an address in Brentwood.

A 100-metre police cordon remains in place across much of Sawyers Grove this afternoon (Friday, October 30), also affecting small parts of Sawyers Hall Lane and Highland Avenue.

Essex Police said occupants of around 40 properties have been evacuated as a precaution while Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts safely assess a number of small items.

A man and a woman remain in custody after police officers forced entry to an address earlier this morning.

Residents whose homes fall within the exclusion zone have been directed to a rendezvous point at King George’s Playing Fields Pavilion while the cordon remains in place.

Police said they are continuing to work alongside partner agencies to ensure the safety of residents.

In an update, the force said: “We appreciate the disruption this is causing and thank residents for their patience.

“We’ll continue to provide updates and hope to have the cordon lifted as soon as possible.”

The incident remains ongoing.
