Drivers in one Essex district pay more for petrol than anywhere else in England, figures reveal.

In Uttlesford, petrol prices average 181.35p per litre across 11 forecourts, making it the second most expensive area in Britain and the highest in England.

That is 6.39p above the British average of 174.97p, adding £3.51 to the cost of a full 55-litre tank.

Uttlesford covers Saffron Walden, Great Dunmow and Stansted.

Only the Western Isles in Scotland is dearer, at 181.60p a litre.

Daniel Weston, founder of SEO Backlinks, which compiled the data, said: "I expected the big cities to come out as the dearest, but it's the islands and the towns around London where people are paying the most.

"Islands have the cost of getting fuel over there, so you can understand that, but it's harder to see why commuters in Hertfordshire or Surrey should pay so much more than drivers in Lancashire.

"With diesel now over £2 a litre, I'd look up prices before setting off, because even within one council area the cheapest and dearest pumps can be 10p a litre apart."

Diesel averages 204.81p a litre in Uttlesford, where seven of the 11 forecourts charge £2 or more.

Even the lowest prices in the area remain high, with Esso and Jet stations on Cambridge Road in Stansted Mountfitchet charging 177.9p per litre.

Uttlesford is the only Essex area in the top 10 most expensive locations.

Nearby Broxbourne in Hertfordshire ranks fourth and East Hertfordshire eighth.

The data was collected by SEO Backlinks using the Government's Fuel Finder service on October 5.

It includes all forecourts with updated prices in the past month, except motorway services and Costco sites.

Of the 328 council areas analysed, Rossendale in Lancashire was the cheapest, with petrol averaging 169.72p per litre and diesel at 196.08p.

Across Britain, the average price stood at 174.97p for petrol and 200.24p for diesel, following a recent warning from the RAC that diesel had surpassed £2 per litre for the first time.
