ENGINEERS are working to repair a downed power cable, which forced a Burnham road to be closed this morning (August 17).

Eyewitnesses say the cable was "sparking" as it hung across the pavement on New Road "at chest height".

Pedestrians were warned to not go within 10 metres (33 feet) of the cable, due to the potential risk of electrocution.

A spokesman for UK Power Networks told the Standard: "We were called to New Road shortly before 7am today after a service cable to a property came down.

"Our engineers are currently on site working to repair the cable bracket and no power supplies were affected by this incident."
