“Atrocious” parking is causing “heated arguments” in an Essex village, fed up residents have said.

Drivers are “coming to blows” and facing queues and delays due to the “poor” parking in West Street, Tollesbury, according to the residents.

The residents are now calling for action to help prevent the ongoing issue.

There are no parking restrictions in the slightly narrow road, which is lined with buildings, businesses and homes.

Laura Smith, 33, said: “It’s getting quite dangerous now.

"At times cars, lorries and other vehicles get stuck because they can’t pass each other and the parked cars. It’s just insane and really does need to be dealt with.”

She said she has seen drivers “shout and scream” at each other as they become “stuck in standstill traffic.”

Fellow villager Josh Higgins, 45, said the roads “are far too small” for the ongoing parking in the street.

He said: “It’s getting a bit ridiculous now and everyone is just sick of it. I am sure there will be physical fights soon, as some drivers get so angry and irate about it all.”

He said it’s also “dangerous” for walkers.

There are car parks in the village, including the Woodrolfe Road Car Park, with about 20 spaces and a car park in Coast Road, which has approximately 30 spaces.

There is also a small car park at the Recreational Ground, which is off Elysian Gardens.

Tom Greenburg, 78, called the parking in West Street “shocking” and joined demands for action. He added: “I worry about this only getting worse with all the homes which are planned.

"The parking is clogging up the road and it’s the main street in, out and through the village.”

A spokesman for the South Essex Parking Partnership, which regulates on-street parking, said: “South Essex Parking Partnership can carry out a review of reported parking issues on the public highway.

"Members of the public can request a review by completing our online application form and attaching documents of support, such as a petition or written support from a local councillor. The form, and guidance on completing it, can be found on our website.”
