A classic Aston Martin and a soaring display of historic aircraft are set to headline a popular event showcasing vintage transport.

The Wings and Wheels event returns to Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome on Sunday, May 24, and will feature more than 200 classic cars.

Among the vehicles on show will be a rare Model T Ford - which saw active service during the First World War - and the legendary Aston Martin DB5 best known as the car of choice for James Bond.

In the skies, the event is set to showcase a thrilling selection of aircraft, although final confirmation will depend on weather conditions, the fragility of the planes, and current aviation fuel challenges.

Invited displays include First World War fighters such as the Nieuport 17 and the rare Albatros DVa.

Other featured acts include the Stampe Team, known for their elegant 1930s-style formation, and The Last Dogfight Display Team, which combines a 1944 Piper L-4H Grasshopper with a Slepcev Storch.

Ian Flint, chief executive officer of Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, said: "Wings and Wheels is one of the highlights of our calendar – it’s fantastic to see the grounds packed with classic vehicles and we’re looking forward, weather permitting, to seeing historic aircraft in the air above this incredible preserved World War One aerodrome.

"Last year’s event was a sell-out and we closed ticket sales early, so if you’re planning to join us, don’t delay."

A wide range of vehicle clubs will be in attendance, including the Corvette Car Club, Anglemog, the area’s chapter of the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, Essex Gas Guzzlers, and Kent Sevens, who specialise in Caterham and Lotus 7-inspired vehicles.

Additional highlights include classic Triumphs, Minis, and American muscle cars, offering something for every motoring enthusiast.

Visitors can also enjoy a variety of food and drink options throughout the day, including a barbecue, a licensed bar courtesy of Datum Attitude brewery, and refreshments from The Airmen’s Mess café.

For aviation enthusiasts eager to get closer to the action, morning Flightline walks are available for an extra £7.50.

These guided tours offer a behind-the-scenes look at the aircraft, with detailed commentary on their history and engineering.

Flightline walks are only available for purchase on arrival and tend to sell out quickly.

Wings and Wheels is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome and has sold out for several years running.

Organisers recommend booking tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.

Adult tickets are priced at £25; children aged six to 15 can attend for £12; children under six go free; and a family ticket (two adults and two children) is £65.

Tickets and further information are available at stowmaries.org.uk.
