IT started with the throwaway question – “Have you heard of Hyrox?”

What began as a casual chat and misunderstanding has snowballed into four Maldon women flying to Finland for an international Hyrox relay, raising funds for causes close to their hearts along the way.

The team – Della Hart, 54; Aileen Fleming, 59; Lou Mason, 46; and Laura Codling, 44 – will take on 1km runs broken up by hefty workout stations such as sled push and pull, rowing, wall balls and other taxing exercises over distances from 50m to 1,000m.

Hyrox is designed to test strength and endurance, with races held indoors in large halls or arenas.

The team have been training since February, when one original teammate Adele had to pull out after becoming very ill with Crohn’s disease.

That’s why the team are fundraising for two charities – the BRA (Breast Reconstruction Awareness), which is very close to Della’s heart, and Crohn’s disease support, in honour of Adele.

Teammate Laura stepped into the line-up just four weeks ago.

Della said: “For us as a group it has brought us together not just in fitness but as friends.

“We are so excited to be taking part in this amazing challenge and finishing together as a great team.

“Both charities mean a lot to us.”

The team will head to Finland on May 8, competing on May 10 as a relay team for Hyrox.

“Of course we are nervous, but we are so ready,” Della said. “Our team are amazing – we will enjoy every minute.

“Our journey is built on friendship, resilience, and saying yes even when you’re not quite sure what you’re signing up for.”
