Essex fishing equipment shop could become a nail salon

An application has been lodged with Maldon Council seeking permission for works at J P Tackle, 159 High Street, Maldon.

The proposal was received and validated on Thursday, January 29, 2026, and is currently pending consideration.

According to the submitted documents, the plans include alterations and repairs to the existing shopfront, the installation of new fascia and projecting signage, and internal alterations to facilitate use of the premises as a nail and beauty salon.

JP Tackle is widely regarded as one of the largest fishing tackle retailers in Essex and had long been a familiar presence on Maldon’s High Street.

The business benefited from the town’s proximity to some of the country’s most popular fishing locations, drawing customers from across the county and beyond.

Since it's closure, the building has remained vacant and was put up to be let.

The application does not yet have a decision, and the council’s planning portal lists the status as “pending consideration”.
