SWIMMERS in Maldon are being encouraged to take part in the 40th anniversary of Swimathon.
Taking place in pools across the UK from March 20 to March 22, the event offers a chance to raise funds for Cancer Research UK, Marie Curie, and the Swimathon Foundation.
Duncan Goodhew, Olympic gold medallist and Swimathon president, said: "It’s incredible to think that, for forty years, Swimathon has brought people together to enjoy the benefits of swimming and raise extraordinary sums for charity.
"I can’t wait to see what the next 40 years have in store."
More than 750,000 people have taken part in Swimathon since 1986, raising over £55 million for good causes.
This year, pools across Essex are involved, including Maldon’s Blackwater Leisure Centre.
Patrick Keely, Cancer Research UK spokesperson for Essex, said: "Fundraising events like Swimathon are vital to fuel more progress.
"Every length swum will help bring us closer to a world where everybody lives longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer."

Swimmers can choose individual distances from 500m up to the Triple 5k, or team relays of 1.5k, 2.5k, or 5k.
For those unable to join during the official weekend, MySwimathon allows participants to complete their swim anytime in March.
