WENTWORTH Primary School in Maldon has been awarded a £150,000 grant to convert its former caretaker's house into a new early years' facility.

The grant, from the Department for Education, will be used to transform the three-bedroom property in the front of the school grounds into a 21-place day-care nursery.

Headteacher Dawn Dack says the nursery will significantly boost "high-quality childcare options" for families in the area.

Work has been carried out in close cooperation with Viking Adventurers, the school’s established wraparound-care provider, to ensure the nursery links seamlessly with existing before and after school services.

The partnership will allow the school to offer full-time childcare throughout the year, and a holiday club for ages four to 11.

The nursery is set to open in January.
