A REMEMBRANCE Day figure has been restored to his former condition thanks to sheltered accommodation residents in South Woodham Ferrers.
The residents, from Masonic Housing Association’s sheltered accommodation at Hamilton Court, brought the town's symbolic soldier Tommy back to life after he was found in a dilapidated state.
Tommy was given a new uniform and frame in time for Remembrance Day, thanks to the efforts of the residents - many of whom remember the Second World War.

Ken Turner, representing the Masonic Housing Association, said: "This wonderful effort by our residents captures exactly what the Masonic Housing Association stands for, compassion, community, and shared purpose.
"It’s heartwarming to see such dedication to remembrance from those who lived through those challenging years."
The project was led by South Woodham Ferrers town mayor councillor Alan Shearring, who asked the residents to help refurbish Tommy before Armistice Day.

Despite challenges with age and eyesight, a group of women at Hamilton Court crocheted hundreds of poppies, hand-stitched others, and rebuilt Tommy’s frame using a redundant duvet.
The residents gathered daily in their lounge to work on the project, sharing stories and laughter as they completed the tribute.
Tommy is now displayed outside Champions Hall as a symbol of remembrance and resilience.
