A man from Essex convicted of sexually assaulting a woman he met on Tinder has been ordered to carry out unpaid work.

Daniel Lampey, 25, stood trial accused of touching a woman inappropriately at her address in 2023.

He denied the charge but was convicted after a trial at Chelmsford Crown Court.

Meyrick Williams, prosecuting, said: “The complainant and Mr Lampey had been in correspondence on Tinder.

“They went to her home.

“They went upstairs to her bedroom – she was clothed, and so was he.

“They watched TV and they went to sleep."

The court heard Lampey touched her inappropriately.

She later texted her father to say she had been sexually assaulted.

Mr Williams continued: “Later, the complainant went to the police – the defendant was interviewed and it was a case of simple denial.

“The jury favoured her evidence and he was convicted.”

Daniel O’Malley, mitigating, said Lampey still denied the allegation but had written a letter to apologise to the victim for the distress he caused her.

He said Lampey’s father had months to live after being diagnosed with lung cancer, and a jail term would mean he would not be able to see him before he dies.

“It is a matter of great concern to the defendant and he wishes to spend as much time as he can with his father," said Mr O’Malley.

“He is 25 now and is of hitherto good character."

The court heard Lampey, of Lyndhurst Gardens, Barking, had debts of £5,000 but was about to start a course in electrical installation.”

Recorder Richard Christie KC said: “This was an unusual case, in my view.

“It was always agreed you were going to stay in her bedroom on that evening.

“You were going to share her bed – however, there was no agreement there was to be sexual touching of any sort.”

He added: “You have shown some insight into the pain you have caused her.”

Lampey was sentenced to a two-year community order which will include rehabilitation sessions and 300 hours of unpaid work.
