MALDON'S service to support people facing homelessness has been highly commended at the Essex Housing Awards.

The district council was recognised in the Meeting Housing Need – Homelessness category for its emergency accommodation project, which provides safe and secure temporary housing for individuals and families facing homelessness.

The scheme, based within the district, offers adapted accommodation while longer-term solutions are found and ensures provision is allocated in the district to avoid placements out of area.

Richard Siddall, leader of Maldon District Council, said: "The award is great news, and it shows what we can achieve when we focus on doing the right thing for our residents.

"I’m delighted that the council has been acknowledged for a smart, forward-thinking project that gives people a decent place to live when they need it most."

The award follows the successful refurbishment and occupation of emergency accommodation facilities within the district.

The project was funded through a combination of Section 106 contributions, Local Authority Housing Fund grants, and capital borrowing.

It supports the council’s wider aims to improve access to housing, reduce isolation, and promote health and wellbeing, while also backing its climate action work.

Maldon District Council thanked all those involved in delivering the project and said they look forward to continuing work to support residents and tackle housing need across the district.

The Essex Housing Awards celebrate the best housing work across the county, including new builds, refurbishments and support services for residents.
