A new butcher's is opening in Burnham with its 30-year-old owners saying they want to keep the art of traditional butchery alive.

The Butcher’s Deli in Foundry Lane in Burnham will be opening on October 14.

The family run shop is owned by couple Drew Nutley, 30, and Kat Watts, 30, who have been working in the food and hospitality industry since they were 15.

Drew started 13 years ago as an apprentice at Wrekin Farm Shop, which became the Dan Hull Farm Shop, and was trained by traditional butchers Steve Hull, Phil Barret and Norman who have more than 50 years’ experience.

In 2021, the pair took over Essex Hog Roasts with the pair taking the opportunity to open their own dream butchers when a lease became available at Mildmay House.

Drew said: “I’ve been lucky enough to spend my career learning from some of the very best in the business - true masters of their craft who taught me that butchery isn’t just about cutting meat.

“It’s about respect. Respect for the craft, for the produce and for the people you serve.

“It’s a dream to share my passion for good, homemade traditional cooking with freshly prepared, high-quality meat and produce.”

Kat, in the week before opening, has been getting ready making food such as scotch eggs, quiches, beef pasties, cheese and leek pasties.

This is because the butchery will also have a delicatessen element and ready meals to buy including beef lasagna and beef bourguignon.

Kat said: “Cooking is a big passion for both of us.

“We wanted to incorporate that both into the shop.”

Loyalty cards for customers which can be used to buy a free leg of lamb or joint and a Christmas special are yet to be finalised but will be launched.

The butchery’s meat is sourced from an abattoir a few minutes down the road as well as from the Hull family at the Salt Marsh Essex farm based in Southminster.

Kat said: “Drew has always admired that location where we are putting the butcher's, it just happened to come up.”

Drew is also a fish monger, with fish being available at the butcher's on Thursdays and Fridays.
