A THURSDAY lunch club which takes place in Heybridge has been given a community and voluntary award by the parish council.

The Thursday Lunch Club provides transport, hot freshly made meals on the premises, refreshments and entertainment for about 40 guests from Maldon and Heybridge.

The club, based in Plantation Hall, received the 'highly commended' award in the community and voluntary group category at the Rural Community Council of Essex (RCCE) in July.

A spokesperson for the Heybridge Parish Council said though managed by the council, the volunteers run the club both giving up their day for free and going the extra mile for guests.

The spokesperson said: “Without the volunteers, the club could not function.

“Many of the guests are socially isolated as well as vulnerable and depend on attending as it can be their only source of interaction.

One of the guests said: “We are all excited to come to the club and cannot wait until for Thursday, it’s a good laugh and I just love coming here, everyone is so kind”

Another guest added: “I always have a lovely time, the hall is bright and welcoming, all the volunteers and staff are so kind, the food is good, and we are so lucky to have this club.

“I feel at home, well looked after and would not want to miss it.”
