Maldon schoolchildren have lit up a care home with a heartfelt performance of song and poetry.

Pupils from the choir at St Francis Catholic Primary School, in W Chase, visited Brewster House, in Heybridge, on May 21, where they sang and recited poetry for residents.

The visit, organised by Brewster House lifestyle coordinator Leoni Kempen, came about after a resident recalled the joy of hearing children sing during a dementia champion meeting.

Ms Kempen said: "It was lovely to see everyone smiling.

"The children really brought so much energy to a wet afternoon."

Residents described the afternoon as "extremely happy", with many moved to tears by the performance.

Beryl, one of the residents, said: "It was amazing and brought back so many memories from when my children were in school."

A standout moment was the choir’s rendition of an ABBA song, which prompted residents to sing along, dance, and thank the children.

A spokesman for Brewster House added: "These intergenerational moments are incredibly valuable.

"Music, memory and community connection all played a part in making this event such a success.

"Brewster House are incredibly grateful to the students and staff of St Francis Catholic Primary School for taking the time to brighten their day."
