A disused farm building could be transformed into a nursery in Southminster.

Plans have been submitted to Maldon District Council to convert a former farm gatehouse into a day nursery and pre-school.

The porta-cabin style structure, located at Colleton Foxhall Road, Southminster, was originally granted planning permission to be used as a gatehouse.

The building, which is roughly 138 square metres and 30 metres from the road, would undergo minor alterations to accommodate its new purpose.

An additional toilet will be installed to meet Ofsted requirements for the number of toddlers and staff.

The main hall will be used for play, education, and feeding, while a staff room will be provided for breaks.

A safe outdoor play area will be fenced off.

The nursery will accommodate 25 to 30 babies and toddlers, with drop-off times between 8am and 9.30am, and collection times at 12pm, 3pm, and 4pm.

The current car park is expected to manage the additional traffic, with a maximum of four spaces needed during opening hours for quick drop-offs and pick-ups.

The new nursery will utilise the existing layout of the building, making the necessary adjustments to ensure safety and functionality for the children.

Maldon District Council will consider the planning application in due course.
