Residents are invited to a free event in Promenade Park to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

Maldon District Council is calling on residents to participate in the "Shared Moment of Celebration" on Thursday, May 8, 2025, in Promenade Park, Maldon, to commemorate 80 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe.

The council has joined forces with Maldon Town Council, Best Bar None, Maldon Rotary Club, Maldon Youth Orchestra, local historian and broadcaster Stephen P Nunn, historic vehicle owners, and other organisations for this national celebration.

Councillor Kevin Lagan, chairman of Maldon District Council, said: "We will be joining thousands of others wanting to remember and pay tribute to the brave men and women who took part in WWII, not only from our country, but other countries that fought side by side with us during the dreadful dark days of war.

"I hope our event will mark this anniversary in a very memorable way and will be an occasion not to be missed.

“I am very grateful to Stephen Nunn for providing the local historical context and the mayor of Maldon, councillor Andrew Lay and Maldon Town Council, for sponsoring the film screening, together with Best Bar None, and for the support from the Governments UK Shared Prosperity Fund, all of whom have made this event possible.

“I hope as many residents will join us to mark this special anniversary.”

The event is free to attend but those wishing to watch the free film screening are asked to book their tickets in advance due to limited space.

The programme begins at 6.30pm with a performance from the Maldon Youth Orchestra, followed by a free outdoor screening of the film "A Royal Night Out" at 7.30pm.

The film, inspired by true events, is a romantic comedy recounting the celebration of the end of the Second World War in Europe and the evening when a young Princess Elizabeth and her sister, Princess Margaret, take to the streets of London for an adventure.

The evening will continue after the film with a welcome at 9.05pm, followed by "Celebrating VE Day: 80 years on" by Stephen P Nunn at 9.10pm.

Councillor Kevin Lagan will read "The Tribute" at 9.20pm, followed by the Kohima epitaph at 9.25pm, and the lighting of the VE Day bonfire at 9.30pm.

This event has been made possible by a £3,000 contribution from the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
