Priti Patel MP has criticised Labour's "reckless" housing targets for the Maldon district.
The MP for Witham met with Tolleshunt Major Parish Council to discuss the impact of the new targets, which have more than doubled.
She said: "Labour’s decision to more than double housing targets in Maldon is reckless and completely disregards the views of local communities.
"We are already seeing the consequences, with developers being given the green light despite the opposition of local councils and residents."
The meeting also covered local infrastructure projects, including the long-awaited Bennett Island project, which is set to begin on March 17.
This project aims to improve access and infrastructure for residents.
However, concerns were raised about the impact of the increased housing targets on local planning decisions.
A recent ruling by a planning inspector approved a new development in Wickham Bishops, citing the new targets as justification to override local planning authorities.
This includes protections for the countryside and local environment.
Priti Patel added: "The Government must respect local decision-making and protect our villages and countryside from inappropriate development."
She pledged to continue campaigning against the "excessive" housing targets and to work with local councils and communities to ensure sustainable, locally-led development that respects the character of Maldon’s towns and villages.
