PLANS to introduce a series of 20mph speed limits on various roads in Burnham as part of an effort to improve road safety for residents and pedestrians have been revealed.
The proposed restrictions will apply to multiple roads in the town, including residential areas and new housing developments.
Essex County Council intends to establish a 20mph speed zone on a number of roads.
These include Endeavour Way, Newman Drive, Edmund Street, Benson Close, Regatta Road, Harris Street, Fitzwilliam Road, Brent Way, and Valley Road.
The objective of this initiative is to ensure that vehicle speeds remain below 24mph, in line with Essex County Council’s policy for new housing estate roads.
The plan incorporates physical measures, including speed tables and cushions, to reinforce the speed restrictions and enhance pedestrian safety.
The deadline for public feedback on this proposal is set for February 21, 2025.
In a separate proposal,Essex County Council has also outlined plans to implement a 20mph zone on Pointel Street in Burnham.
This measure is part of a broader initiative to maintain low vehicle speeds within new developments, particularly in areas where pedestrians and vehicles share road space.
The introduction of this speed limit aims to create a safer environment for residents, including children and visitors, by improving visibility and reducing the risk of accidents.
The council’s policy emphasizes that all new estate roads should be designed to encourage lower speeds through a combination of regulations and physical measures such as tight bends.
Public comments on this proposal will be accepted until March 21, 2025.
Both proposals align with Essex County Council’s broader road safety strategy, which is based on the Essex Design Guide and the Essex Speed Management Strategy.
The plans also adhere to the guidelines set out in the Highways Act 1980 and the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016 document.
