A HISTORIC 14th century church in Stow Maries needs urgent help from the community to re-open.

St. Mary & St. Margaret Church is in desperate need of restoration after suffering severe damage due to theft and weather exposure.

In December 2019, thieves stole the lead from the church roof, unknowingly setting off a chain of destruction.

Over time, the roof began leaking, causing significant internal damage.

The ceiling started to crumble, making it unsafe for visitors. While people on Church Lane provided temporary roofing, a full repair is desperately needed.

Dedicated churchwarden Kathy Swan, 71, said: "We need £70,000 to replace the roof with stainless steel and repair the water damage inside.

"We've raised only half the amount in five years. The church is such a big part of our community, and we really need to get there."

The church holds deep historical significance, with graves of First World War pilots stationed at the nearby Stow Maries Aerodrome resting in the churchyard.

The community is calling for urgent donations to restore this beloved church.
