MALDON'S Carnival court has been crowned after a special event was held at Maldon Town Hall.

This year’s carnival court were officially given their crowns last Saturday for the forthcoming Maldon Carnival which is taking place on August 3.

The seven members of the court, which is made up of queens and princesses, will lead the carnival procession on the day.

Brianne Roberts, 13, is the carnival queen for the event, and she’s a student that enjoys art, design, dance, music, and wants to be a designer when she grows up.

Brianne said: "I'm so happy to be selected as Maldon Queen and look forward to representing Maldon and Heybridge and raising money for charity."

Brianne will be accompanied by senior princesses Amy Godden, 12, and Mia Hawkes, 12.

The junior members of the court include junior queen Jessica Hawkes, 11; junior princesses Ayla Burton, nine; Lydia Hockton, nine; and the rosebud princess Emily Hockton, aged six.

Prior to the crowning, Amy, Jessica, and Mia of the court did a five-mile sponsored walk around Chelmsford in fancy dress, and the court has also fundraised over £800.

Keith Howes, the chairman of Maldon Carnival said: “I was privileged to witness the crowning of this year’s carnival court.

“It was amazing to see that Lydia, Jessica, Mia, Amy, Emily, and Brianne managed to raise £860 in sponsorship that will be used to get the carnival court.

"The girls will be out every weekend during June, July, August, and September, visiting carnivals in Essex and Kent, as well as local events."

"This year, our committee has worked hard and pulled together to organize a carnival procession for the entire community."

Before the Maldon Carnival kicks off on August 3, the court will be involved in carnival week which will be held at Upper Plume School, in from July 27.

Throughout, the week there will be competitions and festivities for all ages to raise money for the carnival.

There will be a cash-prize Bingo competition at 7pm, a children’s sports day, car treasure hunt, a lunch with the carnival princesses, family quiz, and more.

The carnivals’ procession will start at Fambridge Road at 2:15pm on August 3, and will move through Maldon High Street, and end in the town’s Promenade Park.

This year’s carnival will be donating to the Firefighters bereavement Fund, Maldon and Heybridge First Responders and The Liam Taylor Legacy.
