BIKERS turned up at a Maldon care home to help grant the wish of a woman in memory of her husband.

Created by the FaNs (Friends and Neighbours) Network, the Wishing Washing Line bonds care home residents with community members who have a shared interest.

The care home residents write down their “wishes” on a card after having a discussion with care home staff.

After being received by the FaNs Network, the wishes are then displayed in areas with high footfall such as shops, tea rooms or libraries.

Members of the public then get in touch to grant wishes they have an interest in.

Margaret, a resident at Hailey House in Highlands Drive had requested to meet motorbike drivers.

Along with her late husband, she had been involved with marshalling motorcycle racing.

The wish, therefore, was in her husband’s memory.

Chioma Cureton, activities coordinator at Hailey House, said: “The residents were super excited and happy to meet the Bikers group.

“The residents were very touched that the Bikers community offered them this kind of opportunity especially as many of them are not mobile anymore.”

Other care homes in the Maldon district have also benefited from the Wishing Washing Line.

Acclaimed singer Daniel O’Donnell sent video messages to June at Totham Lodge as well as Phil, a resident at Longfields.

Meanwhile, the chairman of Maldon Rugby Club granted Totham Lodge resident Bob's wish to attend a rugby match.

Freda from Boucheren and Mary from Firstling are will enjoy horses coming to visit.

Patrick from Longfields has been promised to see Southend United play

Gary from Firstling has tickets to see West Ham and is arranging a date.

A spokesman said: "We have been granting wishes for local care homes for the last six years and it has been amazing.

"During Covid, we had to change and were granted Christmas tree wishes of gift, but we are so very glad to be back to grants these kind of wishes.

"It is just wonderful to see the community coming together to make residents lives a little less lonely and isolated."
