LIFEBOAT crews in Burnham-on-Crouch jumped to action and attended multiple reports of red flare sightings.
Red flares typically indicate occupants of a vessel are in distress.
At just after 6pm on March 6, Burnham RNLI was asked by HM Coastguard to attend the scene in the Barlinghall Creek area.
Red flare sightings were also said to be in the vicinity of the River Roach.
The Atlantic 85 and D class lifeboats were deployed to the coordinates provided by HM Coastguard.
While the Atlantic 85 conducted an extensive search of the River Roach and shoreline, the D-Class crew took on a further search of the creeks at the end of the area.
As well as this, HM Coastguard land units were in attendance and completed a shoreline search of the creeks and surrounding area.
No casualty was located and HM Coastguard made the decision to stand down all units.
Although nothing was found, the RNLI have urged the public to report any flare sightings to HM Coastguard by calling 999.
During the return journey, heavy fog rolled in over the river and reduced visibility for the majority of the voyage.
Both lifeboats arrived back at the lifeboat stations around 10pm.
A spokesman for HM Coastguard said: "A search was carried out on March 6 in response to reports made to HM Coastguard of a red flare in the River Roach area.
"The alarm was raised at about 6pm. A thorough search found no further signs of distress.
"Southend and Canvey Coastguard Rescue Teams were sent, as well as lifeboats from Burnham RNLI."
Burnham RNLI has been approached for comment.
