ROWING enthusiasts took to the water in a bid to raise funds for the RNLI… all while wearing colourful costumes for the occasion.

Maldon Little Ship Club has staged its traditional Sponsored Row and Gig Race for more than 45 years.

More than 38 craft and 118 rowers attended this year’s event, which took place at Maldon Hythe.

Hundreds of spectators were estimated to have been in attendance on the day.

Participants dressed as characters including Willy Wonka, Bathing Belles and a probationary marine policewoman.

Altogether, their efforts raised a grand total of £9,500.

The Basin Oars Ladies team contributed £5,200 from their 200 Club, the Marconi gig Elletra raised £1,455 while Debbie Grafton raised £325 as an individual.
