THE profits gained by a council for parking charges and penalty fines has been revealed.
New data from the UK Government's Department of Levelling-Up, Housing, and Communities shows how much profit each local authority in England makes from parking.
The data shows that Maldon District Council made £567,000 from April 2022 to March 2023 from fines and parking costs.
The profits have come from the council-owned parking spaces in the district.
The funds are then used within the council and to run and maintain the car parks in the area.
Maldon District Council made more than Braintree District Council, which reportedly made £440,000 in the same time period, but less than Chelmsford which made £3,627,000.
A spokesman for Maldon District Council, said: “The income received from car parking charges supports the cost of provision of services delivered by the district council more generally, which includes the costs of running and maintaining our car parks.
“The income received specifically from car park penalty charge notices (fines) issued by Maldon District Council is used only to contribute to the cost of the provision and maintenance of the car parks, in accordance with Section 55 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.”
